For some people, the best way to recharge is to go do something fun and exciting. Cannon Beach and the surrounding area have a number of active recreational opportunities.  From a selection of challenging and scenic golf courses to some of the best kite flying beaches in the world, there is an activity for everyone in the whole family. Some of our active options are conveniently located on the CBCC grounds. Others, are just a short walk or drive from the conference center. Best of all, after a fun filled afternoon of surfing or hiking, you have a great meal and comfortable bed to look come back to!

Bike Riding

Nothing compares to the thrill of biking… the whine of rubber wheels on pavement… the rushing wind… the sights, sounds, and scents of nature all around you. Cannon Beach offers biking experiences for all age and experience levels. Whether you want to cruise the beach on a three wheeled sand bike or explore off-road trails on a mountain bike, Cannon Beach offers everything you need – including the bikes!

Families will enjoy cycling the sleepy neighborhoods of Cannon Beach. Fort Stevens State Park in Warrenton offers over 8 miles of paved pathways well suited for slow paced cruising with smaller children.

For more advanced cyclists, the Miami River road south of Nehalem offers a rolling, beautiful ride. From Seaside, the Lewis and Clark road takes cyclists north all the way to Fort Clatsop and the Youngs River Falls.

Local off-road trails skirt the edges of awesome cliffs along Tillamook Head, Cape Falcon, and Neahkahnie Mountain and meander through verdant Pacific rain forests of spruce, hemlock and cedar. Unless posted otherwise, private logging roads around Cannon Beach are open for use by non-motorized vehicles.

Three wheel sand bikes, tandem bikes, mountain bikes, and trailers can be rented by the hour from local bike shops.

Family Recreation Center

Conference and retreat guests can enjoy basketball, volleyball, pool, ping-pong, mini-golf, and more in our new recreation center. Complete with a running track and work out area, the recreation center offers a variety of exercise options in a safe, comfortable environment.

Check out our indoor 9 hole mini-golf and take your best shot at the course record. Work off that extra dessert in our exercise area. Ready for some hoops? Our court is ready for you!  And don’t forget to try “carpet ball”!

Fishing

A variety of fishing adventures await you in the Cannon Beach area. However, due to unpredictable environmental conditions and because some species are endangered, care must be taken to observe regulations, restrictions, and closures.

Season openings may change frequently, therefore the Department of Fish and Wildlife should be called for current information. In Oregon, call (503) 338-0106 regarding fresh water fishing and (503) 325-2462 for salt water species.

Pacific Ocean salmon, sturgeon, and Albacore tuna are prized fish in the area. Charter boat rates range in price, depending on the length of the trip, boat size, and service offered. Reservations are necessary for most trips, especially on weekends and holidays. Charter boats are available in Astoria, Warrenton, and Ilwaco.

Crabbing is a North Coast favorite. Dungeness Crab can be caught in most of the bays along the coast. Nehalem Bay, south of Cannon Beach, has bayside marinas with boat rentals. They can provide all the equipment and bait. Crabbing requires no license and is an all-year activity. Only male crabs with a minimum shell width of 5 and 3/4 inches may be kept. There is a 12 crab limit per person.

Clams are another popular local shellfish. Razor clams are found on Seaside and Gearhart beaches. Soft shelled clams can be found in Nehalem Bay and many varieties of clams are available further south in Tillamook Bay. Before going out on a shellfish gathering adventure, be sure that the season is open.

For fresh water fishing, your best bet are the local lakes. Coffenbury, Cullaby, and Sunset lakes are stocked with Rainbow trout and are open year round.

Golf

Cannon Beach enjoys a mild climate that makes it possible to play golf year round! Plus with four different courses within a 15 minute drive, plan on bringing your clubs!

Want to experience a championship course and match your skills against the best? Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club is an hour’s drive from Cannon Beach. Pumpkin Ridge has hosted the 1997 LPGA U.S. Open, the 1996 U.S. Amateur (Tiger Wood’s last amateur victory before turning pro!) and will be the site of the next Junior U.S. Amateur in July, 2000.

During the summer months, you might want to reserve tee times in advance. Carts and rental clubs are available at most courses.

Hiking

Cannon Beach is a hiker’s paradise. From the matchless splendor of Ecola State Park to the rugged trail that ascends Saddle mountain, this area offers great hiking with well-marked trails and postcard perfect views at every turn.

Hiking Trails

Saddle Mountain – 2 hours up and 1.5 hours hiking down. Hiking boots are recommended. Wild flowers abound. Usually open March to December. Travel to Saddle Mountain, the highest peak in the Northern Coast Range, by taking Hwy. 26 East to mile post 10. It is a seven mile drive from Hwy. 26 to Saddle Mountain trail. Not advised for small children. A fairly difficult hike.

Ecola Park to Indian Beach trail – A nice 2 mile hike from the parking lot of Ecola Park, provides open views of the ocean, off-shore rocks, myriads of birds and occasional sea lions. Allow 45 minutes to an hour each way. Indian Beach is the start of the Tillamook Head trail.

Tillamook Head trail – 6 miles each way, beginning at either Seaside or Indian beach. Highest point along the trail is 1,200 feet. Allow 3 hours each way. Usually open all year. The Tillamook Head trail traverses a cape jutting out into the sea between Seaside and Cannon Beach near Ecola State park. A short day-trip starts at Indian Beach and is two miles.

Short Sands Beach – From the north, this 30 minute hike begins about ten miles south of Cannon Beach. There are three parking lots. Best to take the one on the east side of Hwy. 101. It takes hikers into a rain forest along a creek that finally empties into the ocean.

Cape Falcon trail – 2 miles each way. Highest point 300 feet. Allow 90 minutes each way. Usually open all year. Travel to the Cape Falcon trail by taking Hwy. 101 south to Oswald West State Park. Park at the first parking lot on the west side of the highway. A gradual hike with ocean vistas. Take a picnic lunch and enjoy a magnificent view at the top.

Arch Cape – (connecting to the Cape Falcon trail) Beginning at Arch Cape on the Old Mill Road, a swinging bridge crosses Arch Cape Creek. At this point, you enter Oswald West State Park and a five mile stretch to Cape Falcon treats the hiker to lush coastal rain forest.

Neahkahnie Mountain trail – One mile each way. High point along the trail is 1,631 feet. Allow 90 minutes for each way. Usually open all year. Travel to Neahkanie Mountain trail by Hwy. 101 south to point 2.6 miles south of the Short Sands parking area. The views are spectacular! Highly recommended.

Cape Lookout Trail – 2.5 miles one way. High point 830 feet. Allow 90 minutes each way. Open all year. Travel to Cascade Head trail by taking Hwy. 101 south to the Three Rock road just north of Salmon river in Tillamook county. Stop at the Tillamook visitors center next to the Tillamook Cheese Factory for more information and directions.

Horse Rides

One of the most enjoyable ways to take in the spectacular scenery of this area is on horseback. A popular activity for all ages, most stables begin renting horses and leading trail/beach rides from late May through Labor Day.

Guided scenic beach rides to Cove Beach at Chapman point, Haystack Rock, and Silver Point offer breathtaking views from a unique vantage point! A horseback beach ride will surely be a memory that you and your family will treasure.

Kites

Kite flying has always been a fun activity for the entire family. Our strong coastal breezes are perfect for flying kites year round.

From the dual string professional stunt kites to the diamond kites you flew as a kid, Cannon Beach is a great place to remember the simple joy of watching your kite cut through the blue sky riding a current of air.

Oregon Coast Surfing

Surfing is one of the most exhilarating experiences the coast offers. Every weekend, thrill seekers from around the northwest descend upon our beaches searching for the perfect wave. For those brave enough to ignore the chilly waters and occasional shark, this area offers some of the most beautiful and popular surf spots in Oregon.

Local surf shops are not only a good source of information and tips, but they will also rent you everything you need for your surfing safari.

For the novice, body boards and skim boards are a fun, safer, and less expensive option.

CAUTION: the coastal waters in this area are dangerous. Riptides, high waves, and sharp rocks have caused injuries and deaths in recent years. Be very careful to abide by all safety rules and never venture out into the ocean alone.

Tennis

Tennis anyone?

Tennis is a popular activity at Cannon Beach. Two lighted tennis courts are located in the city park next to the conference center and are open year round for public play.

Walking

Walking the shoreline of Cannon Beach has long been a favorite activity of conference center guests. Bring your binoculars and you may be treated to the sight of our local wildlife, including puffins, seals, and bald eagles.

Walking to Haystack rock is a long-time Cannon Beach tradition. Make the trip before breakfast and earn a second bowl of our famous cracked wheat cereal.

Whether you are sharing the walk with friends or simply alone with our Creator, the nine miles of wide beaches offer beautiful vistas of ocean rocks, rugged headlands, and secluded coves.
